Science Awards

In addition to the awards listed below, awards are given to MASRF donors based on their contribution level. Information on donor awards can be found on our Pledge Form. Also, a Volunteer of the Year award is given to a current MASRF volunteer who has contributed above and beyond the call of duty.

Awards given to Either Art or Science Exhibits

BEST IN SHOW AWARD
The student with the highest scoring exhibit in art or science will receive a limousine ride and lunch at the Art Museum, the Science Center or the Botanical Gardens by June 15th. A parent and sponsoring teacher accompany the student. If the teacher cannot participate, another adult may be substituted, donated by Lillian Mangelsdorf-Hoering and family.
CREATIVITY AWARD
A silver tray is awarded to the science or art project with an outstanding display of creativity
DIRECTOR EMERITUS' CHOICE AWARD
A trophy is awarded to the student with an art or science project.  Selected by the donor, Eva Kirkpatrick.
EARLY BIRD AWARD
This award goes to the first entry received in art or science.
FLYING EAGLE AWARD
A student and/or a team of students will receive a trophy for an outstanding art or science project. Donated by Lillian Mangelsdorf-Hoering and family.
LEONARDO DA VINCI AWARD
A trophy is awarded to a student whose art or science project best demonstrates the relationship between art and science.  Selected by the donor, Judy Gustafson.
LOUISIANA PURCHASE AWARD
A $50 savings bond is awarded to a student for an excellent art or science project, selected by a member of the Louisiana Purchase Chapter, NSDAR.
PRESEVERANCE AWARD
An award and $50-$100 is presented to a student whose project exhibits an exceptional amount of effort.  Selected by donor Bob Gustafson.

RISING SUN AWARD

$25 bonds are awarded to three K-8 students from Sunrise Elementary whose projects show fun in learning, perseverance, and the potential to truly shine.  Selected by donors (Anonymous). 

SPECIAL EFFORT
A glass eagle is presented to a student whose project exhibits exceptional amount of effort. 
Awards given to Science Exhibits (or their Teachers):
AIR FORCE RESEARCH LABORATORY, THE
A certificate is awarded to the student with the best optical science and engineering project. Winner is eligible for additional cash award requiring further submission beyond MASRF. (Grades 9-12)
ALPHA CHI SIGMA CHEMISTRY FRATERNITY
Certificates are awarded to students whose science projects emphasize chemistry. Two students will receive T-shirts.

American Federation for Vision Awareness

A $100 check and plaque to an individual with an outstanding eye or vision related science project.
AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY
Two certificates are awarded for the best meteorological projects in grades 9-12.
ASM International Foundation (American Society for Microbiology)
Awards one certificate and medallion. The certificate and medallion are sent to the student during the summer. (Grades 9-12)
ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN GEOSCIENTISTS
A certificate is awarded to the student whose science exhibit best exemplifies innovativeness and scientific excellence in the geosciences (9-12)
CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL AWARD
A certificate is awarded for the best science project in biodiversity conservation science (Grades 9-12)
DISCOVERY CHALLENGE AWARD
This is an opportunity to enter the Discovery Challenge Competition. To qualify, the student must be in 5-8th grade, chosen to participate by following the Intel ISEF rules, and be in the top ten percent of the Fair for their grade level.
EASTMAN KODAK
A certificate of Merit and a Kodak camera is awarded for the best use of photography in a science project. The student himself must make the photographs. Students photographing animals must request additional Kodak policy rules before starting work.  (Grades 9-12)
ELMER MANGELSDORF MEMORIAL AWARDS
A check is awarded to each of the four highest scoring students whom received a division award. A check will also go to the teacher of that student, donated by Lillian Mangelsdorf-Hoering and family. Prizes: $100, $75, $50, $25.
EMILY LARSON STOLL MEMORIAL AWARD
A $100 savings bond is awarded to a student with an excellent science project, Selected by the donors, Senator and Mrs. Steve Stoll, in memory of their daughter.
EVA KIRKPATRICK INCENTIVE AWARDS
$25 checks are to awarded each of four students with exceptional science projects
FLOYD AND LORETTA BOEMLER INCENTIVE AWARDS
$50 checks are awarded to each of three elementary students with exceptional projects.  Selected by the donors, Floyd and Loretta Boemler.

GOVERO LAND SURVEYING SCHOLARSHIP

$1000 scholarship is given to an outstanding science project.  Selected by the donor, Govero Land Services.

HERBERT HOOVER PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY ASSOCIATION AWARD

A certificate is awarded for an outstanding engineering project (Grades 9-12).
INTEL ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARD
A certificate is awarded to the 1st place winner in environmental science (Grades 9-12).
INTEL EXCELLENCE IN COMPUTER AWARD
A certificate is awarded to the student with the most innovative use of a computer in a science project. (Grades 9-12)

INTEL ISEF

Two top-scoring 9-12 grade students will be entered in the Intel-International Engineering and Science Fair. The student will receive travel expenses, lodging, the cost of shipping the project by ground transportation, and $200 stipend. The chaperone will receive half of both lodging and travel expenses.
INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR OPTICAL ENGINEERING
Student candidate must be a U.S. citizen. Project must show a clear aerospace application. T-shirt and nomination for additional awards that require further submission beyond MASRF. (Grades 9-12)
LEWIS SHERMAN AND MARIE SHERMAN AWARDS
A $100 savings bond is awarded to each of two students with outstanding science projects, Selected by the donor, Marie Sherman.
MASTODON DIVISION AWARDS
Trophies are presented to the highest scoring project in the science division. Divisions: Kindergarten, 1st-2nd Grade, 3-4th Grade, 5-6th Grade, 7-8th Grade, 9-10th Grade, 11-12th Grade.
MASTODON SCHOLARSHIP
$1000 scholarship is awarded to a 11th or 12th grade student. To claim the prize, the student must be enrolled in an accredited college as a full-time student within the next two years. $2,000 scholarship to one 11th or 12th art or science student. To receive the prize, the student must be enrolled in an accredited college as a full-time student within the next two years.
NACE INTERNATIONAL (National Association of Corrosion Engineers)
A certificate of Merit is awarded to the student with the science exhibit in Engineering or Environmental Science, which best demonstrates awareness on the importance of controlling and preventing corrosion. (Grades 9-12)
NATIONAL COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS
A certificate and a copy of a NCTM publication are awarded to the student with the most outstanding science project in the field of mathematics (Grades 9-12).
OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH
Awards two certificates to Junior High students and four first place Navy/Marine Corps Distinguished Achievement Awards to science students (grades 9-12) whose exhibits are judged outstanding.  Students must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.  Each award consists of a certificate.  All winners will receive $50, winners in grades 9-11 will receive an invitation to participate in the Army, Navy, and Air Force Junior Science and Humanities Symposium Program in the following academic year.
OUTSTANDING  SCIENCE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
This award goes to a science teacher with students entered in the fair.  The recipient is selected by the Fair Committee.
PRESENTATION AWARD MEDAL
A medallion ribbon is awarded to each of the winners (including teachers) who participates in the Awards Ceremony. 
R.K. KIRKPATRICK AWARD
A plaque to the student whose science project best exemplifies the medical field.

SAM WYMAN MEMORIAL AWARD

A $50 savings bond is awarded, by Juanita Wyman in memory of her husband Sam, to an outstanding 7-8th grade project.
SCIENCE CHALLENGE TROPHY
This is a traveling trophy to the student with the highest scoring science exhibit. If a student wins this prize three times, the student will keep it. Donated by Albert and Dorothy Heinze.
SCIENCE FAIR SUPPLY
A certificate, money, and a science display board are awarded to one student from each grade level in the science competition.  Selected by the President of Science Fair Supply.
SOCIETY FOR IN-VITRO BIOLOGY
This award is awarded to the 11th grade student with the best science exhibit in the areas of plant or animal in-vitro biology or tissue culture.
Stockholm Junior Water Prize
A certificate and further competition is awarded to the best science project relating to water quality, water resource management, water protection, water or wastewater treatment, grades 7-12.  Awarded by the Water Environment Federation.
U.S. ARMY
Awards a certificate and a backpack to the five science students in grades 9-12 whose exhibits are judged best in five categories: Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics/Computer Science, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences. The top three students receive $50 savings bonds.  The student judged the best of these three will receive a medallion.
U.S. DEPT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
A certificate is awarded to the student with the best science project creatively promoting good health.  (Grades 9-12)
U.S. METRIC ASSOCIATION
A certificate is awarded to the student whose science project best uses the SI metric system for a significant amount of quantitative measurement (Grades 9-12)
WOMEN IN ENERGY AWARD
A student desk lamp is presented to the student with an outstanding energy science project, Selected by a member of Women in Energy.
YALE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION, INC
A certificate is awarded to the student with the best science project in engineering. (Grades 9-12)
