Art Guidelines

MASRF ART RULES AND GUIDELINES

Please Note: All art exhibits MUST comply with the Mastodon Art/Science Regional Fair General Rules, the Art Rules & Guidelines, the Art Safety & Display Regulations, and the rules regarding entry.

1. Exhibit must have been completed within the year prior to the Fair. The exhibit must be the ORIGINAL work of the student. Be aware of the copyright rules. [Copyright.iupui.edu or Copyright.gov] Teachers and parents and others can only advise.

2. REQUIRED FORMS:

MASRF-A1 (Online registration form) OR,
MASRF-A2 (Mail registration form). NOT BOTH.

Click here for registration information. A copy of the signed registration form must be submitted by the registration deadline to MASRF and a copy must be brought with the exhibit at Exhibit Check-In.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED FORMS:

All Grades - If the exhibit is being entered by the Teacher, the MASRF-T2 form must be filled out and in included with the other forms. If the exhibit is being entered by a parent or guardian this form is not required.

3. Exhibit must be UNFRAMED. Matting is encouraged.

4. Exhibits must adhere to all Federal, State, Local laws and Host institution regulations.

MASRF reserves the right to remove from display any exhibit that does not adhere to the aforementioned laws and regulations. Such removal will result in disqualification.

5. Exhibits must adhere to the Art Safety Rules & Guidelines.

6. EXHIBIT DIVISIONS

Students may enter their ORIGINAL exhibit in one of the following divisions.

K-2 Class: A Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grade student may enter as a member of a class exhibit.
Maximum: 35 students. On Entry Form, enter the name of the teacher and grade level on 'Student 1' space. (Example: Ms. Smith, First Grade). Attach a list of individual student names to the entry form.

Grades K-8: A student can enter one Individual or one Group project. A maximum of three students in a group.

Grades 9-12: A student may enter only as an Individual.

Art Scholarship Competition - in addition there is a special competition open to students in grades 9-12. Students must indicate whether they wish to participate in the Art Scholarship Competition by checking the appropriate box on the entry form. (See Art Scholarship Competition for size requirements.)

7. EXHIBIT SIZE AND TYPE

Wall: Exhibit must fit within a 2' x 2' square space.

Table: Exhibit must fit within a 2' x 2' square space, not to exceed 4' in height

8. EXHIBIT CATEGORIES
Grades K-8: Exhibits in these grades are divided into grade level competitions.

Grades 9-12: Select one of the following categories.

Wall: Drawing (examples: pencil, charcoal, ink, pastels),
Painting (examples: acrylic, oil, watercolor, tempera),
Photography, Digital Art (example: Original Art created from layering on a blank space, with the use of computer tools.), Animation. (example: An ORIGINAL piece of art with origins in cartoon characters, novel illustrations and magna.)

Table: 3D Art (examples: sculptures, ceramics, textiles, woodwork, or any other type of exhibit that cannot be hung flat on the wall.)

9. Artist Statement: Exhibitors are required to include an artist statement. Title your work on a 3x5 inch card and include your thoughts of how the project was created, media used, or other special considerations, etc. Attach this card to your exhibit below the bar code label.

10. Exhibits should not be identifiable to the public and judges by either student/teacher name or school. Any information or symbols from a previous competition must be removed from the exhibit.

11. MASRF, at the discretion of the Art Director, reserves the right to remove from display any exhibit which may be considered offensive or inappropriate. Exhibits removed will be disqualified. The decision of the Art Director(s) is final.
